Lines of Walnut planted between rows of Alder. Here we are high pruning the Alder to allow light to the young Walnut. The Alder will be progressively removed to allow light and space to the Walnut trees.

Sylvopasture at Nicharee Farm

The close integration of trees and pasture brings many benefits. Among them are:

-shelter of animals and plants in adjacent plots

-Tree leaves of various species are rich in minerals and are healthy for animals to browse

-Fallen tree leaves in Autumn provide an organic mulch and nutrients to adjacent pasture plots

-Tree roots grow under adjacent pasture plots loosening soil and improving oxidation and percolation and stimulating soil biology and beneficial fungi called Rhizobium

-creating two different habitats side by side enhances biodiversity
